Revitalized Medvedev Wins First Trophy in Nearly 30 Months
19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 victories have been won on hard courts
A revitalized the Russian player secured his first title for nearly 30 months with success over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.
The athlete, a ex- top-ranked player, has experienced a torrid year, winning just one match at the Grand Slams and undergoing a difficult moment at the New York tournament.
The player's varied form on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his service game in specific - caused him dropping out of the top ten and eventually parting ways with former mentor Cervara.
Presently working with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has steadily progressed in the past month - climaxing in a hard-fought competitive victory over Frenchman Moutet.
It is Medvedev's first championship since the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hardcourt from spring of the previous year.
The win also means Medvedev has won twenty-one titles at twenty-one different tournaments.
"It's the first time I am participating in a tournament with my both daughters at once, so to get a championship is particularly special," stated ranked player the champion.
"This championship is in dedication of my child Victoria, because the maiden victory I won when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."
Medvedev, the past champion, had failed in his past six championship matches, including in that event in the past months.
His retrieving play style and recurring emotional displays on the playing surface had caused commentators to question if his skill to play at the highest level was concluded.
However the athlete has made changes in the past month, making an effort to come to the net and compete aggressively, supported by an improved serve.
The champion fought back from a break down in the initial set against the tricky Moutet, securing 4 of the last five exchanges to take the lead.
The pair traded breaks in the following set before the Frenchman, attempting for his initial ATP Tour title, seized the initiative to force a final set.
Moutet defended 4 early opportunities in a competitive third set before the champion won the break to 15 to secure the win.
Fittingly, Medvedev earned the title with a point at the net, with the Frenchman unable to handle a shot after a lengthy match.
