From Praise to Fury: Conservative Response to Epstein Document Release is Mixed.
Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious concerns about the information may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet some do not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing these files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that came before the legislative vote to pass a law requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were provided physical folders of files that contained little previously unseen information.
