Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever a binding element holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the club had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized during matches as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.

The Youngster's Surprising Comeback

A single player kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his parent club were attempting to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances with the club in that campaign, almost all of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Billed as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
